DIYARBAKIR
Located on the edge of the Tigris valley, Diyarbakir is a wonderfully historical town. Its ancient city walls are claimed to be the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China, and a labyrinth of cobblestone alleys line up with shops inside. Today, it is a fast growing city of over 1 million people. Traditionally a Kurdish settlement of Zaza and Kurmanji Kurds, it is a diverse town that is predominantly poor, but the large dam built recently on the Tigris and the gradual demise of terrorism in the region, promises that it will enjoy a booming future before long.
