HATTUSAS
|
|
Hattusas,
once the largest Hittite city, is today
an astonishingly well-preserved
and excavated
open-air museum. Within the site can be found the Great Temple, among
other smaller temples dedicated to the storm God Teshuba and the sun Goddess
Hebut. Numerous
gates attest to the Hittites' extraordinary engineering capacities of
the time.
Nearby is the Great Fortress, which served as the main palace after the
14th BC. More than 3000 cuneiform tablets were found here. Upon their
deciphering they provided great insights into the history of the Hittites
and Hattusas. |
