The town of Canakkale is a fast growing agricultural center on the southeast shore, with ancient and modern fortifications guarding its waters. Not too far away are the excavated ruins of legendary Troy.
Gallipoli is the name for the narrow peninsula that forms the northwestern part of the Çanakkale straits, the waterway that links the Aegean Sea with the Marmara Sea. Gallipoli became globally known after the Allied assault during W.W.I. Organized by Sir Winston Churchill, it had the intention of capturing Istanbul. Gallipoli is a particularly significant site for Australia and New Zealand. Every year on April 25, there is a national holiday to commemorate their soldiers who gave their lives on the Gallipoli battlefields.
