GALATA TOWER
Galata Tower was built by the Genoese in 1348 as the stronghold of their defense system for their city-state. The precinct had been allotted to them by Michael VIII Palaeologus in his effort to repopulate the city after the Latin destruction. Originally known as the Tower of Christ, the Galata Tower was erected during the first expansion of the Genoese colony in 1348. This structure has collapsed in attacks and natural disasters a number of times and has been re-erected time and time again. It stands as a formidable 67 m. high watchtower in its present-day condition. Until 1960s the Galata Tower was used as a watchtower (fire-watch station), but then it was restored as a tourist attraction as it offers a breathtaking view of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Old City.
