KAS
- DEMRE - MYRA
|
|
One
of the most serene little towns along the Mediterranean coast, Kas is
known for its small and pebbly beaches, thankfully preventing this pretty
town from becoming too popular among the tourists. Myra :The well-preserved ancient city of Myra has one of the most intact Roman theaters to be found in Turkey. On the hills that jut out as the natural limit to the city, are rock-hewn Lycian tombs. Demre: Located on a fertile river delta down the winding road from Kas, Demre is a beautiful small town covered with greenhouses as the delta has a rich alluvial soil. Demre is famous as the home to the Church of St. Nicholas, where the legend of Santa Claus is said to have begun. Apparently, a 4th century bishop started out sending secret gifts to village girls with no dowry through their chimneys. Much in line with the modern day version of the Santa Claus story, the church of St. Nicholas could very well be the birth place for Father Christmas. |
