MOSAIC MUSEUM
A remarkable exhibition of Byzantine mosaics await the interested traveler in the Mosaic Museum. Most of these were discovered during excavations undertaken in 1935. As parts of the Great Byzantine Palace came to light during these excavations, incomparably beautiful and significant pieces of mosaics were revealed as well as architectural findings. Thought to be parts of a colonnaded walkway, probably the northeast portico of the Mosaic Peristyle, the mosaics on exhibition mostly date back to AD 500. Mosaic fans should also note that while the Mosaic Museum cannot be missed, a great deal of important Byzantine mosaics still decorate the interiors of the great historical buildings in the city itself.
